About KayaPact
KayaPact is a free toolkit for South African landlords and tenants: a lease that follows the law, deposit and notice calculators, letters, checklists and plain-English guides. It is part of KayaWise.
Why "KayaPact"?
"Kaya" is South African slang for home, and a pact is an agreement both sides keep. A good lease is exactly that: clear, fair terms that protect the landlord and the tenant.
Where our rules come from
- The Rental Housing Act 50 of 1999, as amended in 2007, for deposits, receipts, inspections, lease contents and the Tribunal. The 2014 Amendment Act is not yet in force and is flagged where relevant.
- The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 (section 14) and its Regulations (regulation 5) for fixed-term leases and cancellation.
- The Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act 19 of 1998 and section 26 of the Constitution for eviction.
- Provincial Rental Housing Tribunal pages on gov.za sites for contacts.
- Every rule in our code records its source link and the date we checked it, and each page shows those sources. Where we could not confirm something, we say so instead of guessing.
- Last full review: 30 October 2026.
What we are not
We are not attorneys and this is not legal advice. Our documents are templates and our guides are general information. For a dispute, use your provincial Rental Housing Tribunal (free), Legal Aid South Africa or an attorney.
How the site is funded
The site may show clearly labelled display advertising in future. We do not use affiliate or referral links, we are not paid to recommend anyone, and adverts never change a document or a result.
